Mobil 1 works just fine and is cheaper. Synthetics will lower the trans temp.

What kind of a car is it?

If it's a High HP shootout car you might want to read this http://www.nealtrans.com/techinfo.html#fluid

I'm using Hurst Hot Shift, because it's the only thing I could get my hands on at the time. But I'm fixin to change.

How about the John Deere Hy-Tuff hydraulic tractor fluid? I hear it holds up very well. And just put a quart of regular red colored fluid in with it to give it some color so you can read the dip stick better. Anybody heard of this?

I've used it before (the John Deere Hyd Fluid). Smoked 2nd clutches in my 400 with it, but I don't really think it was the fluids fault. Regardless I wasn't ready to risk it again and went back to regular Type F. On the new transmission I'm putting in I'll be using the compressor oil.

I've heard from a lot of locals around here that you shouldn't use synthetic oil in your tranny. It's fine in your engine and 3rd member but their reasoning was it makes your internals too slippery. I'd be interested in some feedback from you guys. I'm almost ready to fill mine up and was wondering what to use as well.

One other question after reading John's link...Will the Amsoil comp oil work in a high performance TH400 or is it just recommended for glides?

It'll work in a 400 same way. Note: You do want to warm the transmission up with that fluid before making passes, it is a thicker fluid than standard ATF.

I use the CATIPILLER to-2 oil. no issues yet. not bad priced compared to the specialty stuff. i think it was almost 50 dollars out the door for a 5 gallon bucket.
