Valve springs with titanium retainers

#1 Post by JES » Thu Jun 11, 2009 12:42 am

With a ti retainer can you go with less spring pressure ? If so how much less ? With less mass the spring should be able to do it's job easier right ? Is H-11 a good spring material ? Cam in question is 254 @.050 and .600 lift in sbc, cam company said 225 on the seat and about 600 over the nose. max rpm will be no more than 7100. this is a solid roller with shaft mout rockers. I was hoping to use some new K-motion spings I already had #k-800, 185/190 @1.850 and just under 500 at max lift. Thanks for your thoughts. John

You rarely want to go less with spring pressure, you will have more issues beating up the valvetrain than you will with more. I don't think I would run less than 250 with a decent solid roller. Check out PAC or PSI for good springs, and H-11 is not the better stuff any more. There are instances where you can go smaller and lighter with springs, but you better have light weight Ti valves and some time on a Spintron. And last, to get the pressure you need you will have to go to a 1.5"+ spring, the 1.46 won't cut it.

Thanks Mark. If H-11 can be improved on, what material is best with in a reasonable price range ? I'll be on the look for 1.5+ springs and titanium retainers that fit my application. John

Both PAC and PSI use better material in their springs, what spring to use depends on how high you can set up your assembled height.

Another note, if you need more or less installed height you can get + or - .050 keepers to help out.
