factory chevy front brakes staying on

#1 Post by rustbucket » Thu Jun 11, 2009 2:32 pm

Went to the track this weekend and got to make 1 pass. The front brakes were smoking hot. the driver rotor is now blue. Im running stock gm brakes up front with a manual master cylinder. any ideas? thanks, tony

I would figure the caliper is hung, or the flex brake hose has issues. If the hoses are more than 10 years old replace them and rebuild or replace the calipers, along with the rotor and pads from what it sounds like.

Check these out. http://info.wilwood.com/CaliperProd.asp ... o=120-5861 If you want to stay with a stock bolt on caliper this is (in my opinion) the best replacement. I put these on my chevelle and the fit great. They are also 4lbs a piece lighter than the factory steel calipers. I dont know the part number of the brake pad they set me up with off the top of my head but they can pick a pad that will also help you stop quicker.
Hope this helps

I replaced the rotors, calipers, pads, rubber hoses and master cylinder. Still when I pump up the brakes the front stays on.
I can pump the brakes and come back in an hour and still cant turn the wheel.
I did remove the proportioning valve and put in one with the twist knob. The line lock seems fine... Im at a loss on what else to try.
If you push the brake pedal in to send fluid to the calipers, when you let up is the master cylinder suppose to create a vacuum to
pull the piston back? Any more ideas? thanks, tony

I've had this happen to me after changing to manual brakes. Turned out the pushrod was just slightly too long. The piston wasn't coming all the way back and thus residual pressure remained for some time.

The seal on the piston in the caliper should be what backs the brakes off. The caliper bolts aren't rusty or worn badly?

found it... The pushrod was slightly bent and catching on the hole in the fire wall not letting all the pressure off.
thanks guys
