th350 build buy what to do
I am looking to build or buy a th350. I have a 355 with about 420hp plus I have a 100hp nitrous shot. It is a 55 chevy 3500lb 3000 stall 3.70 ford 8.8 27 mickey thompson. I drive it on the street and will race it in a bracket challenge next year 10 races and might not use the nitrous. What to get? I have built the one I have in it now but it sure could be better. I am not going to use the case in it now and am having trouble finding a good case.

What's wrong with the one you have now? And what all have you done to it? As far as the parts you installed. And why do you want to use another case? Or did you just want to build another one for a spare?

Re: th350 build buy what to do
The case I have is worked over. I have lots of helicoil in it. I also wont to build one take the one I have out and put in new in same day, get it over with. I have b&m clutches but did not add all the clutches I could have and I put in a hard sprag. I think the thing is slipping and never did shift hard. I used a transgo shift kit and I did something wrong or it is just not as good as the B&M I had. I would like to race next year but I have to drive the car to the tracks and home.

Well I know there's probably a lot more experienced guys on here than me but from my personal experience I would probably build it somewhat the same as the one you have in your car now.
In 1998 I had a 80 camaro with a 383 sbc (still have it to this day) that I sprayed with a 225 shot when I needed to. It weighed around 3400#s with me in it. I ran a 28" tire with 3.73's. Being my first and only car at the time it was my daily driver for close to 5 years. In the 1/8th it would run 7.20's on the motor and 6.60's on the bottle using nothing but pump gas. Mind you I street raced this thing every friday, saturday, and sunday night (weather permitting) and hit the track at least twice a month.
I built the th350 in it using B&M cluthches, a hardened sprag, and a B&M shift kit with a 3000 stall. I too have used the trans go shift kits but they just don't hit as hard as the B&M. I built several of them just like this for a few of my fellow dragracers back in the day and they worked very well, for a long time.
The bottom line is I think that at the weight and power you plan on putting it behind you don't need to spend alot of money on one. As far as cases have you tried looking in some wreaking yards for a used one? If you don't have any luck I have a buddy who own's a transmission shop here in abilene that has a shitload of them. Either way good luck and let me know if I can help you out.

Re: th350 build buy what to do
I dont know why but we broke the aftermarket spags a few times so we use the stock ones.
Re: th350 build buy what to do
Yea I or anybody I knew never broke the stock sprags but I just installed hardened ones in there just to be on the safe side. Maybe I just got lucky. LOL!sc racing wrote:I dont know why but we broke the aftermarket spags a few times so we use the stock ones.
Re: th350 build buy what to do
for any build above 400 hp i would not waste time with a th350...use gm's big brother th400!!!ive heard wise man once say...when using a th350 on a performance application one is running on borrowed time!!!
Re: th350 build buy what to do
I also know of plenty of people who have been low 9's with th350 and a few who have been 8's. all of which were between 3200-3400 lbs. There a few tricks to making them last, depending at what level you want them to perform they can last a long time. In a high 9 low 10 sec car they will last for years, in a low 9 or 8 sec car usually about a season or 2 then its time for clutches. Proper burnouts and not peddeling the car in second will extend the life also572 BBC wrote:for any build above 400 hp i would not waste time with a th350...use gm's big brother th400!!!ive heard wise man once say...when using a th350 on a performance application one is running on borrowed time!!!

Re: th350 build buy what to do
I totally agree with you guys but unless he's planning on doing some engine upgrades or more spray soon I just don't think he will be going 8's and 9's with the combo he's running now. But yea if he's planning on going faster (what dragracer doesn't) it would be better to go with the 400. Or even better a glide! LOL! JMO
Re: th350 build buy what to do
well i wish u guys running th350s well but dont believe the hype that just because it takes less power to turn a 350 that is a solid reason to pick over the 400...do the research by talking to a reputable trans builder that builds performance trannys not just standard rebuilds.also a stock built 400 would live behind 400 hp so so no prob
but maybe its me cause ill take the 400 vs a 350sbc anyday for apps up to about 500 hp or so

Re: th350 build buy what to do
I never said that they are better or there was a reason to choose one over a 400. My point is that i have built them and they last in 9 second 3300 lb cars, and others have done the same builds and have been deep 8's. My point is for a simple bracket car or 10 second ride if it already has a th350 there is no reason to switch to a th400 for a 650 hp motor that sees a car show and weekend use at the track. The correct build will make it last572 BBC wrote:well i wish u guys running th350s well but dont believe the hype that just because it takes less power to turn a 350 that is a solid reason to pick over the 400...do the research by talking to a reputable trans builder that builds performance trannys not just standard rebuilds.also a stock built 400 would live behind 400 hp so so no prob

Re: th350 build buy what to do
Well I got a trans had a shop do it, they build dirt and drag tans. Got red clutches 36 hard sprag blue print and man body. Not cheep. I would have done a 400 but would have to modify the floor and the car is done, no thanks. As far as getting in the 8 or 9 the track would have to be down hill.
My car is not as fast as I think it is.

My turbo 350 is a great piece, The only problem for me is it needs a diffrent first gear to settle the car down so im going to a glide.I have a turbo 350 that was in my car that is in my sig.Trans has a sfi bell housing and of the best parts you can put in a 350 from coan.Im selling mine for 1500.00 will be fresh. If interested send me a pm with your e maill address and i can send pics.
