#1 Post by 62belair » Fri Aug 30, 2013 6:09 am

trying to drive this beast on the street, got a 468bbc 13.1 to 1 brpdix bb2 heads, cmp rllr 652 lift 110 dur. w/ 1.7 rollers. trying to keep it under 230* after onley driving 5 miles......Could part of my problem be he stall? Its got a pwr gld trans with TCI man shft and a 4500 stall, should I go to a 2800 for the street??? The staging lanes are to HoT and HuMiD in TN want to try and street this thing, any help would be greatley appriciated...Thanks

Uh, might have something to do with the 13:1 compression. I'm pretty certain cylinder pressure builds heat. Better buy the biggest radiator you can fit and the highest flow water pump you can find with no restrictors. Need to move a LOT of water through it. Pure water with an anti-corrosion agent. I doubt the converter has much to do with engine heat but, would have an affect on transmission fluid temps.

X2 and also depends on your final drive ratio.....turnin' lots of R's at a slow speed.

I have a 12 bolt with 4.56 gears, a champion rad w/ 2 fans pulling (no shroud) and 1 pushing.........Dude at the Full Throttle told me some of those circle cars are 16.1 tp 1 and theyre staying cool w8ith just an 19" steel fan on the water pump " Really"? I was thinking it was my tune was off, this is my first v8....but not my first build or race.... I just got out of a promod bug 9 sec w/ turbo. but this radiator sh8#$ is new to me....Torch converters too, So if I put like an HD 2800 it will not sound so crazy and be a happy'er gearbox ( didnt think tranny would soud right) :)

Circle cars? You man the ones that run on alcohol? Big difference between alky and gas as far as engine temps. So, these 5 miles that you drive and overheat are down the highway or stop and go traffic? Plus, I'm no expert but, I'm not sure 2 fans pulling on side of the radiator and one pushing from the other may be a good thing. I'd pull the pusher off and see if the 2 that pull air would work better.

That isn't too bad of a gear depending on rear tire size, I assume it is tubbed? Make sure it has enough fuel and timing at cruise and that puller fan may be disturbing the airflow as Mike mentioned. Also is the trans cooler separate from the rad?

Take a look at what Chevy did to keep their Big Blocks cool in like the late 80's pickups. Great big ass steel fan with a thermo clutch. Those move a LOT of air sounds like a airplane when the clutch kicks in, no electric fan can compete with one of those and a properly fitted shroud.

You can run that on the street along with a big radiator and should be good to go.

My 572 c.i. motor has 14.2 compression with a .830 lift cam and a PG trans with a 5400 stall and can drive it in 100* day and never get over 190*. But I have a huge radiator and 2 spal fans that move 5000 cfm's of air.

I agree, its not mechanical. The engine should be able to be cooled with the compression and converter it has.

I was reading all the posts and nobody said anything about wether the motor could be lean. The engine that gets lean at partial throttle will heat up and will not kool down if u try to move a lot of water that doesn't have time to spend in the radiator. Nobody likes thermostats but they are a necessity to keep water in the radiator and restict the wide open flow of not having one. I had a prostreet vega with a 355, tunnel ram, 350 turbo w/reverse pattern manual valve body and a brake with a 8" spragless convertor(5600 stall) with a 486 rear and 19.5 mikeys and I drove it alot on the street and never overheated. good radiator stock h2O pump and good fan. Had 2 1850 holleys(600cfm) coverted to dual feed bowls, it had plenty of fuel at all diff throttle positions deff not lean. I even took the tunnel ram off and put 1 830 annular discharge carb with victor jr manifold and still didn't get hot.
