So, should I try to just nail it in 3rd gear then from a dead stop and then roll out, or should I go up through the gears to 3rd and then roll out?

Some of this depends on how much power you have on tap, gearing, etc. It's ok to start in 1st, then quickly move on up to 3rd. If you have enough motor start in 2nd or 3rd. The idea is to get into 3rd quickly, especially before the motor starts to load down.

Ok. I think I'd rather go up quickly through the gears into 3rd. Thanks John.

PS] How have you been doing? Hanging in there? A lot of people were praying for your family.

I think we're doing pretty good Dave, some days are better than others. Yes, I'm very greatful for everyone that prayed and gave my wife and family support. We've got a lot of very good friends.

We always ran th350s in our cars never broke a stock sprag but broke some TCI ones and started burnouts in 1st, heated the tires in 2nd and came out in 3rd.These cars probably are not as fast as most of your cars but never really had problems. 3400lb camaro 10.30s @130 3100lb camaro 10teens @ 136, 3300lb nova 11.60s@118 lots of others around the same et's and mph all with th350s

400 Turbo

BURNOUTS!! Start all burnouts in 2nd gear then shift to high gear as soon as possible. YOU MUST leave the burnout in high gear. A second gear burnout will damage the transmission if the tires hook while in second gear

Finally, the answer to the "burning" :P question. Good job Gearjammer.

Here's an interesting one -

***WARNING***

UNDER NO CONDITIONS IS THIS POWERGLIDE TO BE NEUTRALED DURING SHUTDOWN,RIDE THE TRANSMISSION DOWN IN HIGH GEAR ONLY.FAILURE TO COMPLY MAY POSSIBLY CAUSE EXTREME DAMAGE TO TRANSMISSION OR POSSIBLE INJURY TO DRIVER.

Guess all those 'Glide guys who pop it into neutral to save stretch on their aluminum rods are rolling the dice, eh or does this only pertain to Hutch Glides :?:

I'm sure that warning is a disclaimer due to the fact that the Trans manufacturer generally doesn't provide the shifter. If the shifter has a reverse lockout, you can go to N in shutdown to save wear and tear on the engine, however you are taking a risk. Then again, drag racing is a risk lol

This is a pretty serious issue. Too bad we can't get Stephen Griner on here to discuss this with us.. I do know you should never neutral a TH400 after a pass, doing so will make the drum spin at speeds where it can (and they have) come apart violently. I assume TH350's and it appears Glides are also that way based on what Hutch wrote. Just so you guys know that's not a "Cover your ass" statement, he means it.

There are some specific valve bodies made just so that you can do it, but it would be wise to avoid doing it unless you know for sure you have one of those. I think this is also a problem with Torqueflights also.

When I had my Hipster Trans brake put in, it has a reverse valve body and the papers that came with it says to NEVER DOWNSHIFT in motion. Says to make sure that you are not moving before you downshift. Dont know how serious it is, but I am not testing it out to see either. LOL
