Finally got my Nova running!

#1 Post by 1nicenova » Thu Sep 06, 2007 7:02 pm

After several weeks & about $15,000 I finally got the 582 I got a great deal on in the car and running. Along with new trans,converter,headers,4" exhaust, fuel pump, carb, nos, caltracs bars & springs & everything else required to run an 800+ hp 582. It's been a hectic and fun build.
I still have alot of tuning & some cooling issues to deal with yet. I have been on the phone with Pro Systems a couple of times about cleaning up the Idle.
The x-pipe & Dynatechs sound sweet when your above 4500 rpm but I'm not to crazy about the sound at cruise or idle. Wondering if I should have went with 3.5" and Magnaflows or try the 4" magnaflows.
Just got the Nos bottle filled today. Still have to wire up the solenoids and plumb the bottle line.
Cant wait to run it at the track for some new best times from the old combo. I think it will easily be in the low tens. It pulls like a freight train from a roll. definetly has to much gear with a 4.11. Seems like I cant pull the shifter fast enough before its on the rev limiter at 6400, of course thats on the street & spinning through all 3.
Anyway just wanted to show some pictures and say thanks to those that answered some of my questions along the way.
John does this fuel cell look familiar? I still need to polish it but it fit great & works great. I ended up tig welding a -12 outlet in for the pump.

Bob,
Thanks for the comments. Yea I'm hoping to be in the 9's, I'm just thinking low 10's the 1st time out on the motor. Should know in a couple of weeks. Have a new set of qa-1's to put on this morning, they should help it hook a little better than the stock shocks that are on it now.

Great looking Nova! Looks like it's going to be alot of fun. Keep us posted on your track outings. I agree with the others that your expectations seem a bit low as far as ET goes(meaning I think it will go faster than you expect) but that probably for the best. Way better to think it will run a 10 and it runs a 9 than the other way around. If I had a dollar for everytime someone got disappointed at the ET on their first track outing, I'd have a heck of a lot faster car than I do now. LOL

Guys,
Thanks for the kind words. There is an open track rental at our home track Lebanon Valley Dragway on friday the 14th. I'm going to try and make it & just run it on the motor for now.
I had it out last night up to the Adirondack Nationals car show thats held in Lake George, NY about 30 miles from my house. It usually brings 3000+ cars in for the weekend. It was a good test for it & brought out a couple of issues. I definetly have a cooling issue. Gets a hot on a steady cruise above 45mph. Seems better Idleing in traffic. I've got a CSR electric pump with spal fan and shroud & 31" wide alum. rad. I've tried 3 different size resrtrictors to no avail. I'm going to try a couple of things. I think it might be a pressure problem under the hood not allowing enough air through the radiator at cruise speed as it did the same thing with my old motor which had all the same cooling items except for a mechanical water pump on that one. So i'm going to cut the rest of the glass out from the back cowl portion of my hood. Its a Harwood & has the 2 small holes for openings. And I'm going to check the voltage at the pump to make sure there isn't any drop. My alt. may be a little on the small side amperage wise. I think its only a 60 amp.
If anybody has had any issues similar to this or has any suggestions let me know. Theres nothing more annoying than overheating.
On a brighter note it was a fun night. Got to watch Joe Catucci in his big procharged Olds from the Pump gas drags do several 1/8 miles burnouts after the cops went to bed around 2:00 am.

WHAT PRESSURE CAP DO YOU HAVE ? IF YOU INCREASE THE PRESSURE OF THE CAP YOU CAN INCREASE THE BOILING POINT MAKING IT A LITTLE SAFER AND NOT BOILING OVER

SC Racing,

No problem on the Valley update. It doesn't look good for the track rental this friday. They are having the nostalgia day on the 29th which I should make. Hopefully the weather will be good for that one.

1nicenova, if that thing doesn't run 9s there's something very wrong.. i have 870hp in a 555cid with a 1.59 60ft went 9.89@142 with 10deg of timing taken out. that's about 720hp. hang on to your short hairs becuase if it hooks it will run 9.5-7 easy..

Cashier,
Thanks for the reply. We will find out this Sunday. I was going to go tonight for the last street night but it doesnt look good. Supposed to set a record temp today around 86 & the thunder storms are supposed to start this afternoon. So I am going to wait until this Sunday which is Nostalgia day. Should be some nice cars there. I also bought a new set of rear tires. The one that are on there now are shot. They sat on the car for 2 years outside while I was building my house. I ended up going with 30 x 13.50 et streets instead of the 315/60 drag radials that are on it now. Everyone I know around here hooks better on our marginal track & the street with them instead of the radials. So I will give them a shot. Also bought a 1" carb spacer a 140 amp alternator & some 90/10 shocks. I reset my pinion angle to -3 degrees. I should have my nitrous wired up by sunday so If everything goes right and the plugs look good after 3 or 4 passes I think I'll squirt it too. I will get booted for not having a comp license or sub 9.99 safety gear (sfi pants, boots, gloves) though. Everything else is there. I'm sure it should run deep in the 9's on a 150 shot. Also have the new GZ vacuum pump installed & its working great all leaks are gone and seems to have some more power. I will keep everyone posted as to what it runs. Thanks
