Going on a diet!

#1 Post by nastynova » Wed Nov 12, 2008 7:35 pm

Well seeing how the snow has officially stuck to the ground for a week now I figured I'd start tearing the car apart to shed some weight. The Nova had OEM Discs up front with Stock drums in the rear, I pulled them off the other day and ordered up the Aerospace Disc Brakes for the front & rear, I also ordered up a set of tubular upper & lower TRZ arms, to shed a little more weight I pulled the Power Steering box off and picked up a manual steering box. Not sure how much is going to be added back on when get to that point but it's gotta be alot less then this. My plan is to try and shed between 75 & 100 pounds with the new additions, it'll be close I'm hoping! After cleaning up my mess I realized I had accumulated quite the pile of parts that were not going to be used. I dug out the scale I use for filling my nitrous bottles and started weighing the parts up that are not going to be reused and this is what I came with.

Power Steering Box 29.60#
Rear Drum Brakes Pair 40.12#
Front Disc Brakes Pair 74.87#
Upper & Lower Arms 47.23#
Total Removed 191.92#

You can subtract another 50+ lbs if you cut the cross member between the lower control arms.
Box them and add a piece of 1 5/8 dom....

Any plans for "glass" parts? Was suprised what we lost with a "plastic" nose and no inner fender wells!

It's got a bolt on glass hood on it already but it way heavier than the old lift off Harwood I had on the other Nova, if the motor wasn't in it already I'd probably consider cutting out the center of the subframe but I ain't going through all the headaches again to pull the motor and all that for 50#. maybe next season when we freshen it up I'll do it. It had glass bumpers on it but I'm a sucker for chrome plus it made it look better than the painted glass bumpers.

That's crazy on the weight savings. I had no idea a set of front disc brakes, with rotors I'm assuming, weighed so much.

That was the 2 rotors, 2 calipers, 2 caliper mounting brackets and 2 backing plates.
For some reason I was thinking someone made billet aluminum steering arms for stock steering on a nova. I know the stock steel steering arms are fairly heavy.

I too hope to do away with the power steering pump this winter.

I just did some more diggin' around and according to Johns site here there's about 12# difference between the Power and manual box. And from what I've seen the there about 15 to 20# difference between the TRZ Tubular Upper and lowers compared to the stock upper & lower arms. So if that's true that would put me at around 72 to 75# off the front end with the changes. I'll keep my fingers crossed!

Man that box looks huge sitting there on the ground. I don't think I have seen that view of one before. Is it the same width as a power steering box. I have very little clearance with the big headers I am running, but I would possibly be interested. How much shipping to 22560?

I will find out the shipping for you. I think shipping would be about $ 25.00 so $125.00 total.
It's smaller then the power box but it still is not the small. If your headers fit with the power box they will definitly fit with this box. I don't need it anymore sence I went with a rack.
It was rebuilt before I got it and it has only been bolted to the frame not driven at all.
