Wilwood or ???

#1 Post by Bob West » Wed Feb 17, 2010 7:32 pm

I currently have wilwood front discs and chevrolet drums on the back of my car. I'm using a Chevrolet cast iron master cylinder at this time looking to make an improvement. Should I go with Wilwood or is there something else I can use that would be pretty much a bolt-on deal? thanks.

I'm also looking for the best deal on a JW bell for a th400 :smt003

Hey Bob,

I have strange brakes on my car and I love them! I went from factory disc in the front and factory drums in the back, to the Strange pro brakes front and rear with there master cylinder. I installed everything myself and it was one of the easiest things i have installed on my car and on top of that i think i lost like 50lbs if i remember right... I know it was alot.. and i lost alot of brake drag as well.. The quality is NICE and they look pretty too... LOL

Hope this helps!

I am more than happy with the Wilwood brakes, just looking to upgrade the master cylinder. 3700lbs is almost too heavy to try and slow down at Mokan ;)

I have a master cylinder from a '89 Dodge D100 pickup. I have Aerospace front discs and stock rear drums. I had to widen the mounting holes and adjust the pushrod, but it was an easy bolt-on. I kept the stock combo valve but added a Wilwood 10 lb. residual valve for the rear drums. If you look hard, you can find one with the aluminum body. Most all have the plastic reservoir.

Did you have to get any adapter fittings for the brake lines to the m/c? My pushrod is adjustable.

How do you know what size piston/bore you need?

You can either take a guess at it based on what someone else is running - like Craig's recommendation above, or call Wilwood and ask what they recommend for your setup. They will want to know the ratio on your pedal BTW...

The smaller bore will give you a softer pedal and be able to generate higher brake pressures for the same foot pressure but won't have quite as much volume as the larger bore. The larger bores will give a much firmer pedal, but may not be able to generate as much pressure, you'll have to push harder to get the same hyd pressure.

I'm using the 1 1/8" which is the size Aerospace recommended for my 4 wheel disc setup.

Bob,

On my Camaro, which has disc/ drum setup, I'm using a Strange M/C, B3360, 1.032" bore.

I had to remove the 2 bolts from the brake pedal bracket, that holds the factory M/C on and drill new holes for the wider bolt hole dimensons on the Strange mounting flange. Not a big issue.

It comes with all the flanges and pushrod.

When dealing with master cylinders, its nice to know your pedal ratio, it can make a big differance.

I found it easier to widen the holes in the master cylinder itself. Plenty of meat around the holes to do that.

The pedal has two holes so the rod can be moved up or down. One for power brakes and the other for manual brakes, but I'm not sure what the ratio is.

What type of improvement are you looking for? Better pedal feel, more stopping power, lighter pedal, firmer pedal ?, thats going to determine which m/c you use.
