I have been hearing that in jan. 2011 NHRA will mandate all cars running 9.99 or quicker to have an engine diaper installed. even in pro ET and super pro ET.
Is this true?

I think you can also use a pan. That's what I'm going to look into for mine, can't see how I'll be able to get a diaper around the dry sump with all the hoses and everything.

I made efforts to make clearance and have a custom DRE diaper on my Malibu which is still a stock suspension type car. At work, we rarely do pans as I don't feel they are near as efficient as a ballistic diaper. Coolant and oil may not drop straight down into the pan, especially with high speed air flow running under the car. I just don't feel the pan does much compared to a diaper which fits nice and close to the pan & block covering the entire block up to the head deck surface.
The only thing I wish is mine completely covered the oil filter which right now is mostly exposed on the back side by the flexplate.
Although a tight fit on some cars, a diaper is a very good idea. Keep in mind with as much $$$ as we put into our cars, it wouldn't take much to lose the whole car in an accident from fluid under the tires when a $200-550 diaper would possibly eliminate the chance. Also, if something happened and you did not have a diaper and you lost control, you can easily take out the car in the other lane like previously mentioned.
Cheap insurance.

I think it is a good idea also. At what point is the diaper required to be SFI rated diaper?

If you run 7.50 or faster you need the SFI diaper.
