5 point harness with no roll bar

#1 Post by Gus68 » Sat Feb 05, 2011 9:46 pm

Hey guys! I woulld like to upgrade my seat belt in my Chevelle from my stock, 43 year old lap belt, to some thing a little more.... well, safe! My car runs low 12s high 11s on a good day. I know a roll bar is a good idea, but I don't have one, and the car is a street car so.... Anyway What is my best option? I have heard that you should't run the sholder straps over the seat and down to the floor cause this will compress your back in a wreck. Could the sholder straps be run to the rear seat belt mounts for the back seat? Or should I just get rid of the sholder straps and run the lower half? (seems kinda pointless). I think I am getting old, cause I am starting to think of things like this, but I never could understand how a 43 year old lap belt is OK to run but a 5 point harness cant be more than 2 years old!!?? Almost forces guys like me to stay with the old junk.

You are correct that it is a very bad idea to run the shoulder harness up and over the seat and right down to the floor. You're depending on a weak seat back to handle tremendous forces in a crash. Anchoring the shoulder harness as far back as possible will really help with this. So you're on the right track.

So any good ideas? I'm sure I somene has installed a 5 point in a car with no roll cage. I'm just looking for something better than a 43 year old lap belt. Anyone???

Your idea of using the rear seat belt anchor location is a pretty good idea I think. That's what I was meaning to say before.

Same boat here with no answers. I really don't want the tubes. I will start detuning, or tuning for street manners (however you want to look at it), at 11.50.

I would put a bar in it, but then it starts becoming a race car. Then it's not useful in the household, not driven, trailered to races ...if you can find a class it fits in.

That's excatly my thing too, Evil. My car is still a street car, but a few weekends a year I like to bracket race. The car runs 11.70s and I am getting older so I think of things like safety. I know a cage would be best but like you said, then its a race car.

You can go up and over the stock seat if the anchor point for the shoulder harness is either high enough or far enough to the rear to keep from loading the seat itself in a wreck. At minimum, some sort of extension to the harness that connects to the rear seat belts or their anchor points.
