Flame Retardant for Racing Clothes

Flame Retardant for Racing Clothes
I came across a flame retardant that can be applied to
racing suits, jeans or any type of fabric. Apply M-111
after your racing clothes have been washed and the
fabric will not support combustion for approx. 50 seconds.
The down side is the flame retardant has to be applied
after each washing but the results are very impressive
to me. You can view a short video here:

I only wish I had known about this product when my
sons were drag racing. I was washing all of the flame
retardant out of their suits and didn't even realize it...
Duh!

Re: Flame Retardant for Racing Clothes
No, other than the product is manufactured in Phoenix and
a couple I am friends with told me about M-111 since they know the
chemist who created it. I bought some and sprayed it on
some artificial garland at Christmas and then lit the garland
on fire and the flame went out after about 5 seconds.
M-111 is impressive and I just wanted raise the awareness
of racers who might not know the effectiveness of the
flame retardant on their racing suits.

I think I've only ever washed a race suite but once...how often do some of you wash them?
I don't wash them for this very reason unless I get it real dirty which to date which as mentioned before has only happened once.

Re: Flame Retardant for Racing Clothes
When my sons raced I washed them every other race as I wanted them to look
clean. Little did I know I was washing the flame retardant out.
I have learned since if you own a very expensive suit made of Nomex for
example the flame retardant somehow is not washed out. But the less expensive
fabric apparently washes out.

Somehow I am having a hard time believing that manufacturers of SFI suits are spraying them with a flame retardent that washes out. In fact Nomex is a flame/heat resistant type of fiber that does not change when washed.

Right, Nomex doesn't have that problem....

Re: Flame Retardant for Racing Clothes
Your talking about proban suits..That is true they are sprayed and after you wash them a couple times they'll burn like normal clothes. So your not supposed to wash them.A Nomex suit on the other hand will stay flame retardant after being washed because nomex is a non flammable material.Nomex is more expensive but it's worth it.
