Has anyone ever rear mounted a radiator?

#1 Post by camaroman9 » Sun Jul 17, 2011 11:09 pm

Thoughts, experiences, and pics are needed. I'm thinking about possibly rear mounting my radiator under the car due to the fact that have the turbo forward facing and centermounted doesnt leave much room up front. Thanks

Are you running an W/A intercooler? Just use the water/ice tank and plumb it to the motor.

If not yes you can run a rear rad. You can flat mount it under the trunk floor. Depending on the rad size you will need 1" ~ 2" of clearance and a shroud and Spal fan. The problem will be with the fan pointed down it will stir up dist ect... in the pits and return roads.

Another option is split rads or a pair of small rads on either side of the turbo.

No intercooler for me. I had originally planned on running two "half" radiators from a honda, but after getting the turbo set where i want it, there isnt enough room between the headlight buckets and compressor housing. The fan i have is wired up as a puller right now. The 12x12x2 ones from frozen boost would fit, but i am planning on driving the car some, so i would like to be able to drive it without worrying about it overheating.

I thought about that also, but i will need to the crossover and wastegate plumbed before i explore that option.

I'm thinking that mounting the radiator in the back of the car will significantly increase the amount of coolant in the system. Will this extend the time it takes for the motor to come up to temp prior to running ? Maybe it's not a big thing, but my tiny little OCD-enhanced brain immediately makes the leap...

Well, with there being more liquid in the system, i would think that heat would be distributed over a larger volume of water. I would think it might take a little longer to get to temperature, but it should also help disperse heat quicker.
