Its basically a different design of sprag. Much stronger than the standard roller sprag.
I wiped out a sprag 6-7 years ago and we went spragless with it. The car would 60' but wouldn't pull on the top end at all. Killed 5-6 mph in the 1/8th mile. ET was way off too. So we put a mechanical diode on it and its been great ever since. Same converter with just tweaks made to it over the years to match the combo changes.
