Driveshafts
Has anyone heard of or used a company called Shaftmasters, http://www.shaftmasters.com out of Michigan ?
They will make a custom aluminum shaft for $265.00 or a steel one for 209.99.
I'm needing a driveshaft and for those prices, I'm hoping that someone can give me some good feedback about them.

Those prices sound about right. I had a thickwall steel driveshaft made, complete with 1350 crosses for about $225.

I'm looking to run in the low ten's, no trans brake and maybe a slight shot of NOS.
I asked my friend at S&W and he told me that I do not need a moly shaft. He said a moly shaft is not forgiving and if you nick it, it will let you know, as with a steel one, it is more forgiving.

I ran low 10's for years with my stock driveshaft at 3400 lbs and it was originally a 6 cly car.
I would still buy a good one since you need one but I wouldnt going overkill.

I bought my driveshaft from southwest speed on ebay , called them up and asked if there shaft would work in my application , and they said absolutley. I figure they know more about it than i do. Shaft has worked great for almost a year now, takes a hit from a trans brake every pass.
So just call the place up and ask what they recomend and if there product will work in your application. Dont be afraid to ask them questions either, surley if they want to sell there product 10 mins. on the phone with you is well worth there time for a sale.

I gave this place a call and the guy on the phone recommended a 3.5" dia w/ .083" wall thickness.
He said it was good for 3400 ft/lbs. and up to 9300 rpm's.

according to mark wiliams site the criticalspeed of a 3.5 inch steel shaft is around 6750 rpm, for a 54 inch long shaft, that what a nova uses with a 9 inch and 1350 yoke, not sure how long your shaft is ? I have also spoken to a few other shos that agree with the shaft being larger than 3.5 inch if you wre going to turn more rpm than that. hey it may work and never have a problem, but the thing is you are taking it pas its critical speed every pass on each shit you are cuting into it life span.Bruce69Camaro wrote:I gave this place a call and the guy on the phone recommended a 3.5" dia w/ .083" wall thickness.

That said I stil probally woud go with a 3.5 inch shaft since i cant clear the 4 too well ith a low car and 3.5 inch exhust. the alum shaft is rated about 75 rpm more

I have a Strange 3.5" dia. 52" long chromolly drive shaft that is way over kill for my 3400 lb car with a motor that make a 1000 hp.
Cost was $360.00 with 1350 u-joints. Not being able to hurt it with my set up------------------------------------Priceless

wow a 3.5 inch moly shaft is rated for about 1000 rpm more than a 3.5 ms shaft

Thanks I appreciate all the advice.
I also saw the info on the MW site about critical speed. With a 50" shaft, the
3-1/2" it's 7968 and with the 3" it's 6885. I"m looking to shift somewhere between
6000-6500 rpm.
My motor is only around 520hp and if I decide to spray it, I may only go around
an extra 125/150 shot.
I just going off of what the sales person told me as for the foot pounds and rpm.
I called them back because I was worried about the clearance between the driveshaft and
safety loop, only having a 1/4" on each side. They said instead of using the 3-1/2" with
a .083" wall, they could make me a 3" with a .095" wall if that is what I wanted to do?
Again thanks for all the help. I guess I need to do more studying.

The driveshaft in my Firebird came from Summers Bros its 3" I think its cm and has 1330 u-joints its been in the car since around 1994 its been behind all different engines even a blown bb that made 988 hp and over 750 ft lbs its been 9.0's @ 150 at 3600 lbs . I had new u-joints put in and rebalanced at a local shop and its still straight.
