You can put the pinion centerline anywhere by just offsetting it in relation to the axle tubes.I have a pinion centering guage I use to set the pinions when cutting the diff. As far as should you or is there a rule in place, no, I center the pinion in the chassis on all the diffs I do because makes everything easier when building the rest of a car (everything is centered) Plus you don't have a compound angle in your driveshaft u-Joints.

My 2 Cents

Oh well I guess when the person narrowed my rear they must have had a few beers. Its off 1/4. It is 38 inches flang to flang. That should be 19 on each side. But is 18 3/16 and 19 13/16.

I guess anything is possible with a few beers! LOL Sometimes when narrowing a rearend the axles kinda dictate what you can do. Might not be the case with yours but mine is off center 1/4" on purpose because I had the factory axles resplined. There was some reason that mine had to be this way, maybe because of the dia. of the axle shaft, or a taper or neck-down. I really can't remember. But I was too cheap to buy aftermarket axles, so I gave it a shot. Hey, it works for now. No joint problems yet!

Yea I am doing the same thing, but the guy who narrowed the rear didnt know that. If I remember I think my last race car was that way. I just wanted to see what other people thought..
