Usually the maker of the chute will supply you with instructions. If not, I would contact Stroud Saftey, they have a really good pamphlet about chute packing, it has good photos and instructions. Usually you have to purchase one of his chutes to get this info but he may send you one anyways.

The chute didn't open! It had something to do with the cable release mechanism.

Dave Morgan's "Door Slammers, The Chassis Book" has a series of pictures on how to pack a Stroud if you happen to have that book. Also some pic's of the mounts, cable brackets, etc.

I can scan my Stroud instructions for you if you don't have access to that book - just let me know but it will be a few days before I get a chance to do it. A Simpson probably packs a little different though, I don't think they use a chute bag but it would work in the same basic fashion I believe.

I'd suggust opening it a few times at home and packing it back up to test the cable and to practice folding it up. Make a slow pass at the track and try it out to get used to it some before you need it. Also the chute makers recommend airing the chute out during the winter. You don't want them to get moldy/damp.

The first time I tried my chute I did it in the garage. I pulled the handle and it didn't open! After flipping the fold on the pack it popped out though. I guess not using it in over a year the pack had taken a bit of a set and needed moved around a bit. I opened it and packed it several times to make sure it was working ok and to get some practice packing it before actually using it. Now I'm only "slow" at packing it, still need some more practice getting all the folds over and pulling the string through without help.

Well let me know if you want me to scan those instructions, not a problem to do I just have to remember to bring them to work. Actually this sounds like a good idea for a technical article for the web site. I bet a lot of people are wondering the same things. That'll be a project for me this winter.

BTW: Nice Nova! Post some more pic's of it over in http://www.dragstuff.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=15 so we can see more of it.

When you're posting there is a "IMG" button right above where you reply at. You'll need to have your pictures hosted somewhere and post the URL for them within the img tags that button makes, for example
[ img]http://put your url to picture here.jpg [/ img]
(remove the spaces in the brackets.

There are a bunch of free hosting places on the net, for example
http://www.imageshack.us/ works fine.
