WELDING

#1 Post by 70 nova » Thu Feb 28, 2008 5:52 pm

HI GUYS, JUST WONDERING ABOUT SOMETHING, THAT MY BUDDIES AND I WERE TALKING ABOUT. WHEN TIG OR MIG WELDING WITH A NEW CAR THAT'S COMPUTER CONTROLLED, OR A HOT ROD THAT HAS ALOT OF ELECTRONICS, LIKE MSD, ELECTRONIC FUEL INJECTION, OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT DO YOU HAVE TO DISCONNECT EVERYTHING, OR JUST THE BATTERY. ON AN OLD CAR IT PROBABLY WOULDN'T BE TO DIFFICULT BUT ON A NEW CAR IT WOULD BE JUST ABOUT IMPOSSIBLE. THANKS, ANTHONY

Most electrical systems have a chassis ground. Just disconnecting the battery doesn't remove all the current paths.

You allways here about disconecting the battery but I worked in an exhaust shop for a while and we did a lot of welding and never disconected anything....and these were late model cars with all kinds of electronics.....but when I weld on my car I usually turn the battery switch off just to be safe....never had any problems.

I usually unplug the main plug on my MSD box just to play it safe with it.

I tell people to pull the electronics on race cars , on oem cars they tell you to place the ground clamp as close as you can to the part being welded
