Help welding

#1 Post by 70 nova » Thu Mar 20, 2008 3:19 pm

I am welding my frame connectors through the floor. As I was welding from on top with my welder(Hobart 187), everything was working well. When I tried to weld from underneath( inverted welding), for some reason it just wouldn't weld, the bead just wasn't forming, the bead would just clump up into a ball and fall either onto the ground or into the nozzle. I tried to play with the settings and wire speed, but it wouldn't work. Does anybody have any tips or tricks, besides flipping the car over, haha. Thanks, Anthony

Point the nozzle in the direction you want to go and lean it back about
45*. Try to start your puddle on the frame connecter and move it to the floorpan. I usually stitch weld the pan to the connecter- pull the trigger, let off over and over.
I hope this helps

I heard you can reverse the polarity when you weld upside down ,make the body a + and the welder a - does this actually work?

yes you can reverse the polarity but you have to readjust the machine speeds/feeds afterword , when welding upside down i ussually speed up my welding movement( more of a whipping motion ) to keep it from blobing and drag the gun back torwards me and keep more of the heat on the tubing instead of the sheetmetal . and make sure that metal is spotless when you weld even residue from undercoating screws it up .
100% Pure Pontiac well all except for the rearend. its a Ferd .
