building a flow bench

building a flow bench
I am in the process of building a flow bench. My plans show using thin sheet metal for a rotating orifice plate(several sizes to choose from). I think it looks kind of hokey. not o mention sheet metal doesn't machine very well. I was thinking of instead using 1/4" Plexiglas and boring my orifice holes on the Bridgeport. As long as leave my edges sharp and I am having it flowed for actual flow by a machine with a traceable calibration.... ya suppose that would be problem?

You can use sheet metal if ya want, but if I was going to use metal it would be stainless or aluminum so the surface dont rust.
Most of them are made from lexan or plexiglass. Personally I would rather have mine made from lexan incase I misplace it and it gets stepped on or something gets sat on top of it.

Re: building a flow bench
The orifice plate in my SF-600 is metal. Gold anodized. The plenum can reach temperatures over 150+ degrees in the exhaust flow direction. Not sure if you would warp a plexiglass orifice or not.
Have you seen this deal?

You can build a plenum / air box and get a couple of Grainger vacuum motors. The flowquik is accurate and fairly inexpensive.

I don't think it will bother the plexi at that temp. I am going to have the orifice flowed on a flow bench with a traceable calibration, to calibrate my bench anyway. I am going with a u tube manometer and an inclined manometer. most of the parts I already have laying around. th major outlay of money was the 12 vacuum motors and 4 sheet of mdf. I got lucky on th vacuum motors... got them through a surplus place at 16 bills each. the mdf was 25 a sheet.

Evil, Sounds/looks like the old MSD bench? Do yourself a favor & check out...www.tractorsport.com. There are some sick individials on there & a bunch of great ideas. May alter your thoughts on a few things. Lorne

Re: building a flow bench
AND Yes... THANK YOU for the link this i VERY helpful. and answered my question by the way. the orifice DOES need to be a SHARP edge. I may till use a plexi wheel and mount sharp edge plates in it. the plexi can get to seal good and consistant, but still have an easy change over.HAULIN' IT wrote:Evil, Sounds/looks like the old MSD bench?
