Radiator, core support cover

#1 Post by supernova » Wed Feb 18, 2009 8:29 pm

I needed something to hold the radiator as the stock one will not work. This is what i came up with. I have a small hand brake an thought i would give it a try. It still needs to be trimmed on the front edge and painted.

hey chris
after looking at it again i think i would just round off the coners on the front edge and polish the scratches out with a buffer and leave it the aluminum look. i like the way it breaks up the core support and it looks more high tech just my 2 cents

Thanks guys,
It's 18 gage steel. I didn't have a peace of alum. big enough to make it out of.
Should I powder coat it or chrome it?

I'm getting more and more into powder coating. Chrome is too flashy and just doesn't say 'serious business' to me. But then, I'm getting tired of polishing stuff too.

Not really the cover is maybe a pound. Now the big radiator filled will be heavy. But that ok I do plan on driving on the street some. The last set up would not keep it cool.

How about take your hole saw and put some lightening holes in the area right across the top of the radiator ? That way you still seal the top gap just ahead of the radiator and lose some weight as well.

Now for me, penalty weight is not something I worry about, but then I'm not turning the times that you guys are

well now that you got the bending down maybe make it out of some 32 or 40 tho. aluminum now if you do keep it i would power coat it silver or grey just to break up the black but i'm like john on this i am a weight saving fool if you look at the pictures i sent you look at the front end frame and see how much i i spent it to saving weight lol
so again i'm with john i would look into the aluminum and save the weight and exspeicaly so far forward

I used to use a 1/2" wide strap of aluminum for mine bent in a similar shape, bolted to the center of the radiator support. It didn't weigh but a few ounces.
