Re: winter changes/upgrades
That's pretty light, what did it weigh before?

Re: winter changes/upgrades
3258 lbs with me, also carrying 50 lbs of ballast. So 3208 for the car and driver, 3008 for the car alone.John_Heard wrote:That's pretty light, what did it weigh before?
Kinda wish I had replaced this hood though, it's terribly heavy as it was a custom made piece by Glasstek. I'll weigh it on the digital scales Sunday, but as I recall, it was around 45 lbs on the bathroom scale.

Re: winter changes/upgrades
Not a huge reduction, but certainly an improvement. Yeah that's kinda heavy for a hood, pin on would probably be what 20 lbs lighter or more?

275 lbs is a pretty large difference IMO. Tough to get weight out once your to a certain point.John_Heard wrote:Not a huge reduction, but certainly an improvement. Yeah that's kinda heavy for a hood, pin on would probably be what 20 lbs lighter or more?
Would not go pin on, rather stay bolt on. This hood was custom made by Glasstek. They didn't offer a 5" cowl hood for the Malibu back then. They took a stock flat hood, cut the center out and glassed the scoop in. The cowl scoop is nearly 1/4" thick and there's alot of layers where it's bonded together. Just a few months after I had this hood made, Paul Ferucci came out with the same hood. My guess is they made a mold of my hood to start selling them. The production hood is a good 12 lbs lighter as I recall from a conversation with them.

That's more than I figured, guess my brain's still foggy and coffee hasn't kicked in yet. Yeah, 275 is big improvement.

Re: winter changes/upgrades
OK, since the car is nearing completion, I thought it would be fun to play a guessing game.
Lets have members post guesses on how much the car will pick up on the time slip.
Original race weight was 3258 lbs w/driver.
A typical run would be:
1.25 60'
3.51 330'
5.4x 660'
127-128 mph
7.09 1000'
8.510 1320'
D/A in the 1000-1500' range.
Basic combination again:
N/A 582 bbc, dyno'd at 1056hp at 7500, 811 ft/lbs at 6000-6500
1.80 glide, 6500 stall 8" converter from Lenny at Ultimate
4.11 gear
previously ran a Hoosier 295, for 1/8 mile will run a 275, for 1/4 will have to put the 295 back on for finish line rpm.
shift at 8000-8200, same through the traps.
Car should be right at 300 lbs lighter with driver, so lets say 2950 lbs.
You can guess both how much it's improve (if any) and new time slip incremental times.

Re: winter changes/upgrades
I forgot to mention the trap speed in the 1/4 mile averaged 158 to 159.
Re: winter changes/upgrades
Turned out to be a productive weekend. Got alot of little things done including firing the engine again and getting it outside in the sun. Looks fantastic in the direct sun, almost blinding depending on the angle. The photos don't show this too well.
Next up is to send my belts back to Stroud to be rewebbed and get the interior guy here to quote custom carpet and get a date scheduled.
This thing sounds downright nasty with the new mufflers. Wish it was quieter, but with the 25.3, I was limited to what I could fit muffler wise.
I gotta admit I wasn't too comfortable driving this thing around the driveway. Visibility is much different than before. I sit further back so it feels like the front end is a mile long. I also sit lower, so it's harder to see where the front corners are and no outside mirrors make it impossible to see out back. I will have a rear view mirror on the windshield which should help some.
Gotta also be careful loading in the trailer and tieing down with the front lower valence (ground clearance).

Looking good Todd. Know what you're talking about setting lower and further back, it's a bit weird feeling. Guess it's something you get used to.

What is weird is seeing it together, I have followed the build on a couple of sites since you started posting the build. Kudos!

Re: winter changes/upgrades
Did one last final scale of the car Sunday before firing the engine.
2867 lbs w/driver. Only things missing from that weight would be carpet and the headliner. I think we'll be real close to 2900 lbs when it's all said and done.
The weight bias is not what I would prefer, but given the fact that most of the weight removed was from the middle of the car back, it was to be expected the bias would be hit the wrong way.
Will have to wait till the car is 100% complete, but right now it's sitting at 55.4% on the nose where as it used to be 54%.
Here's a shot my buddy Mike took Sunday. I love this angle.
BTW, thanks to Mike Hensley for being willing to help out when needed. Much appreciated Mike.

Just a little clip my buddy Mike took on his phone Sunday. Don't need the video image, just the sound. This is what I need to keep me motivated to get the car done. :)

Next time you should maybe use a different camera - I couldn't hear the blower whine in this vidDOTracer wrote:Just a little clip my buddy Mike took on his phone Sunday. Don't need the video image, just the sound. This is what I need to keep me motivated to get the car done. :)

Course, even without the blower whine, it sounds damn healthy.

Were legal!
Car certified no problem for 25.3 spec which makes the car legal to run as quick as 6.50 in the 1/4 mile at 3600 lbs.
