Chromoly cages

#1 Post by TubbedTruck67 » Thu Jan 18, 2007 12:55 pm

I have a few questions about chromoly cages here.

1. Are the required at any certain mph/et?

2. How many people have one?

3. Whats the weight difference compared to mild steel?

Anything Faster than 7.50 has to have Chromoly

I do Chromoly cages in just about everything I build anymore.

Mild Steel is roughly 2 pounds per foot Chromoly is 1.4 pounds per foot

Mild Steel Cages have to be constructed of .118 minimum wall thickness and Chromoly cages can be .083 and some bracing can be even thinner

I had a 6pt mild steel cage in my Nova up until a couple years ago when I switched to a 12pt. moly cage. The weight gain was pretty much zero, the car is quicker, stiffer, easier to drive and suspension changes work better.
