Fiberglass door HELP

#1 Post by bradpric » Tue Aug 30, 2005 8:26 pm

I am building a 68 Camaro, and I have a Harwood one piece front end. I want to install fiberglass doors, and I need some help from people who have glass doors. First the front end is very flimsy at the point where the fender and the door meet. When I called Harwood they said the doors they sell have a lip on them for the fender to rest on, and it helps line up the fender and the door. I have seen many fiberglass front ends and I can't see this lip on most of the doors. I could add fiberglass to the fenders and mold them into shape but I would like to know how everyone else has done this. Has anyone used another brand of fiberglass like Unlimited Products, they have the doors for half the price of Harwood. I want a good product but I also want a good price. If anyone has a suggestion please let me know.

I have tried both unlimited and harwood doors on 69 camaro.
harwood doors are much better. Unlimited doors have inner struchter
for stock door panels but is pretty nasty looking. Harwood has a smooth
inner struchter for tin door panels "jegs highperformance work well"
I REACAMEND USING HARWOOD BY FAR !!!!

I used all unlimited panels on my Nova
some of the panels needed a bit of work I molded my own front end together using their panels
Like most things they are cheaper but the quality suffers if you dont mind a bit of extra work then the price is good.
good luck

Well I went with the unlimited products fiberglass doors, and deck lid. The quality is ok, but the time it took to get them was unreal. The day I orderd them I was told 3-4 weeks, it took almost 8 weeks, good thing my car was apart. No one wants their racecar down for 2 months waiting on parts. The money I saved was not worth the time spent.

You'll find that Harwood is best. Hairy Glass is about the top of the line, but I don't know whether they have your doors in their product line.

It isn't uncommon that material has to be added. You may have to contact a chassis builder. They fabricate the fiberglass matting to doors all the time. It has to be a specialist in "door cars." Someone in the Sportsman ranks or Pro Stock builders. You can call for some tips from Jerry Bickel, S&W, RJ Race Cars, Hansen Race Cars - all these guys can help you with some detail. Also, alignment has its tricks, you may need to cable and turnbuckle inside you doors to draw the fit together diagonally to the body and lower rocker panel - Good Luck

If it were my car, I would add the lip to help support the fender. Too much flexing will cause damage. Unless you can support it to the side of the cowl. If you have access to fiberglass materials and are interested, I'll walk you thru making pieces on a flat sheet mold. It's real simple and you can use it for other applications. Let me know and I do another forum on the subject.

I reinforced my fenders with 1/4" steel rods and 3" sq flat pcs welded together like the funny car bodies. It stops the flex and cracks and is easy to do. 8-)
