Gun drilled axles
I have 35 spline axles in my car and i'm thinking of getting them gun drilled and star flanges. Just wondering if anyone has done this and what is the weight differance. I just pick up a aluminum center section for a very good price. Just hoping to lose about 120 lbs from my car.

Your not going to lose 120 lbs with axles and an aluminum center... How heavy is your car??
The aluminum centers are hard on gears...There is not a hole lot of weight savings with an aluminum center, and to me it's not worth it as a set of gears cost 300+ dollars now..

Re: Gun drilled axles
I know i,m not going to lose 120lbs with just the center section and gun drilled axles. As of now my car is 3520lbs. I would like to get my car down to 3400lbs without cutting it up. The class i run in has a min. weight of 3200lbs and I would like to get a little closer to that with my car.

Re: Gun drilled axles
With the car at that weight IMO I would not go with a aluminum center as you will be lucky
if the gears will last a hundred runs. As for the axles 40 spline axles are just a little stronger
than solid 35 spine axles.
What can you do in your class?? Can you do any "bolt on fiberglass"

Re: Gun drilled axles
I also agree with the fact that an aluminum center is not suited for a car that heavy. I use gun drilled axles but I got them new like that, I don't think I would spend the money to have them set out and done.
However if you want to drop weight from you diff you can, but it costs big $$$..
You can also lighten your ring gear, go to titanium spool and fasteners etc. I don't think the extra cost is worth it.
My 2 cents

Re: Gun drilled axles
I called moser today and was told not to do the aluminum center because of the power and weight of my car. I'm still getting the axles gun drilled with star flanges just because it doesn't cost that much. I think I will just have to get myself to lose some weight. Thanks for the info guys
Re: Gun drilled axles
A gun drilled 35 spline axle is only as strong as a 31 spline non gun drilled axle and if they're moser I wouldn't waste the time or money.

I snapped my moser 31 spine axles this year, but they had a lot of passes on them

Re: Gun drilled axles
Not bashing any axle companies, but I think strange and mark williams make a better product with a better warranty, but of course they are more money.
I am not really sure what the question is, but I am pretty sure the answer is Big Block.

Re: Gun drilled axles
If gun-drilling Moser axles, something to investigate would be how it affects the heat treat of the axles. All Moser axles are induction heat-treated which means only the outer portion of the axle has been hardened while Strange and MW offer fully heat-treated axles. The full heat treatment might be preferrable in a gun-drilled option. Induction heat treat is nice for axles that are driven on the street as it makes the axle more ductile and able to withstand the irregularities of street driving like bumps and pot holes. Fully heat-treated axles do not twist and bend as easily. It's something to check out in case you haven't ordered axles already.

Re: Gun drilled axles
It's my understanding that Moser provides a lifetime warranty against axle breakage. That's the warranty I believe I have my 33-spline axles in the Camaro.

From their website:
''Moser Engineering, Inc. will, at its’ sole discretion replace or repair, free of cost, any part found not to be of ordered dimensional specifications, prior to assembly or use of the part.
In addition, Moser Engineering, Inc. will replace their 33, 35, & 40 spline axles for a period of ten (10) years after the original date of purchase if broken at the splined end due to excessive horsepower. However, 33 spline axles that were broken due to excessive horsepower will be replaced at the sole option of Moser Engineering, Inc., with 35 spline axles. In the event that 35 spline axles are broken due to excessive horsepower within ten (10) years of purchase, they will be replaced at the sole option of Moser Engineering, Inc., with 40 spline axles. If 40 spline axles are broken due to excessive horsepower, they will be replaced at the sole option of Moser Engineering, Inc with another set of 40 spline axles, free of charge.''

Re: Gun drilled axles
I have been looking at this option aswell. I currently run moser 28spl c-clip axles for some added strength over stock as i have added nitrous. I am going to be narrowing the rear this winter and want to upgrade axles. The only way i can get any decent axle spline in a 8.5 10b is to go with the 33 (highest spline option) and a spool. I do not know if i will like this as it sees alot of street time. I figure 33 splines are overkill for me and thought that gun drilled and star flanged would be plenty strong yet lighter.
I may have to look into Strange or MKW options though.
I was looking to upgrade rears but i am confident the 8.5'' will hold up to my peezly low 11 times and will be much cheaper.
