Somebody recently posted a reply to a thread I was following here and I got an email notification on it. That's the first I've seen from DragStuff in a long long time.

Are you guys still hanging out here ? I've been busy building new stuff but have been focused on Facebook with the various performance groups there. It'd be cool to hook back up with some you guys here :)

Thats what I'm saying, I'm trying to get back into racing, and might have some questions to ask, and it's better to go here then try to spend hours researching on the internet. IDK, man

Yup, still hanging around. Just got done racing at Tulsa earlier this month. Can't wait to get back out again.

Hows the Nova running ? I'm getting ready to fire a new build - seems like it's taken forever to get to this point...

We've been making steady gains with it, it's running low 4.50's consistently now. When the stars and the moon all line up can certainly see it can run deep in the 4.40's. At Baytown in March we went a new best 60' 1.051 tripping the beam with the bottom of the front tire. Just need to get the front and back half all working together at the same time.

I haven't been on the track in a long time. I'm hoping to get the Camaro back on the street soon and chasing the stripe shortly after that. I'll need to do it the right way - this is my first EFI build and it's pretty obnoxious - it'll take time to get the tune dialed in. Should be pushing something over 1000 hp not long after making noise, so it should be entertaining :)

This is my first experience with Dart Big-M blocks. The whole priority main oiling thing was new to me, as was the need to tweak top end oil flow volumes.

I'm running Isky Ezy-X solid bush rollers and .120 thick wall pushrods, feeding T&D rockers. In priming the motor on the stand I discovered there was sketchy oil flow to the top end. Given the placement of these Big-M lifter oil galleys and the high lift and long duration of the cam, there isn’t enough opportunity for oil flow across the entire cycle.

After some research I found tech recommendations from Dart on how to address oil flow issues like this.

Darts recommendation was to machine the lifter body, creating a .020 deep, .080 wide passage from the lifter oil band up to the oil port feeding the pushrod cup, thereby increasing oil flow to the push rod during the entire cam cycle. The second part of their recommendation was to add oil restrictors to the front galley feeds.

I have a small milling machine in the shop here so I pulled the lifters and made the modification. Let me tell you, using an end mill on a set of brand new, high-end Isky RedZone lifters was scary. Hugely expensive gear and I’m carving on it with my home milling machine. Got it done, but geezo…

After this, I tested oil flow again and found I then had WAAAAAAY too much volume. On to the second part of Darts recommendation, adding oil restrictors to the front of the block. If you’ve not played with this, there are of 3/8” galley plugs on either side behind the cam gear – pull these and there are 1/4” threads further inside. To meter and restrict oil flow volume, you drill and install internal plugs, reducing the amount of oil flow to the lifters (and top end). To give you an idea of how significant the new oil flow was, I ended up drilling the two restrictor plugs with .100 oil passages – this seemed to provide a good volume of oil to the rockers during priming. Some builders on Yellow Bullet told me they ended up dropping all the way back down to .040 restrictor ports on each side, but I wanted to err on the side of caution. Having too little at the outset would be bad - once I get this thing running, I can always install plugs with smaller ports to further decrease volume.

Anyway, that’s one of the adventures I’ve had during the build of the new motor. I’m discovering there is a whole different reality when you’re building stuff at this level. It’s not out of the question to think that I could end up making 1500+ hp out of this 540 down the road, especially if I swap out the roots blower for twin turbos, though that’s not currently in plan. But embarking on this sort of build has really been an education. Lets hope it doesn’t end with a bang and lots of shrapnel, lol…

There are some pretty experienced folks hanging out here and a lot of good tech info in the post history.

What sort of build are you working on ?

HARRY BUDDY!!!!!
How ya doing man?
Guess what, putting the Camaro on the street. I'm picking up the new rear housing on Monday and that will be the last piece, for now, that I need to put it back on the street.
How are things out there with you?
Bruce

Bruce !!!! Did you break your old rearend ? You're putting it back on the street ? When did you have to take it off the street, and why ? Did you break things, radically upscale things, decide to accept a real challenge and install a blue oval drive train ? What gives ? laffin...

Me, I'm still hammering the final bolts into this new EFI drive train and should have it spewing parts with gusto soon :)

So fill me in on what's been going on with you !!!!

Happy 4th of July to you all!
Harry, my car has been off the street since I got it back in 1989. I got the car with the full intention to be a race car, but now since all this crap with my knee, and everyone I know has gotten out of racing and built a street car, my wife asked what it would take to put it back on the street, so that we could enjoy the car more, so being a good husband, I listened and now the car is just about street legal. I bought a new housing because the original one was too short and I needed to push the tires out closer to the quarters, to make it more stable. I went with M/T 29 x 18R-15 street tires and brought them out to 1.5" of the panel. I pick it up today at S&W.
Check out this link of the car running with the 496 and mufflers: https://photos.app.goo.gl/asFPJ9o23KQ35trY7
I'm happy with how it sounds and can't wait to drive it on the road for the first time.
Just need to get insurance and a license plate.
I never got a chance to run the car with slicks after getting the miss figured out with my car. It ran 10.34 @ 134.77mph with an ignition miss so I still feel pretty good that it's very capable of seeing a 9 second run, but not sure if it will on street tires. Maybe have to buy a set of 29.5 x 13.5 slicks to see how it runs.
So how soon until you finish up your EFI setup?
