700r4's are a very weak tranny outta the box when it comes to hard hitting motors. They have a very weak band between 1 & 2 I think it is...correct me if I'm wrong.
My dad built a '48 English Anglia 2 yr's ago and thought that because the car was so light...that he'd be able to make one of those R4's live behind a blown 355sbc...after 2 of them, he went to a 400 turbo and has been very happy. Now that's not saying that if he would have wanted to spend a good bit of money on that R4 he could have made it live...but it takes a considerable amount of money to do so.

From what Ive heard the problem is with the 1-2 band that holds the drum. But the shift servo also has alot to do with the problems, b/c people put a billet servo in there for the 1-2 shift. This makes it too firm and applies to much pressure on the rod that connects to the band and it break the the ear off of it. Which means no more second gear. So incase anyone plans on building a 700r4 a plain ole corvettte servo will more than happily do the job for you.
